The Glendale Smoke-Free Ordinance went into effect on Nov. 6 but will not affect the current state code prohibiting smokers from being 20-feet from building entrances, windows and open vents.

Steven P. Wagg, chief of police, says that since GCC is a special district that devises their own enforcements, the city's ban will not apply to the college but the 20 feet rule, which the "county has asked for health reasons that there's no smoking within 20 feet of a door or an operable window," will apply.

On Saturday, Nov. 15, a State of Emergency was declared in Los Angeles after fires broke out in the hills of Orange County and surrounding areas. According to NBC News, the fires began at 10:30 p.m. on Friday near the 210 Freeway in Sylmar. Residents were immediately evacuated, and forced to leave their homes and belongings.

The head football coach at Citrus College resigned Friday, Nov. 21, according to a press release published by the college's athletics department. Kevin Emerson, who has coached the Owls for eight years will officially leave Jan. 31, 2009.

The 2008 season was Emerson's first losing year as head coach since taking over in 2001.

Nine months ago, Davik Teng, was flown to California from Cambodia to have her heart repaired. Hearts Without Boundaries, a non-profit organization, helped secure the health of the 9-year-old from Cambodia.

One of the volunteers for the organization, David Kem, also helped fundraise for Teng's surgery.

Latin American people, landscapes and revolutions were captured in a dramatic photographic "poem" presented by retiring Latin American Studies Professor Carlos Ugalde in Kreider Hall Thursday.

The expressive faces of old and young people from countries south of our border, juxtaposed with exquisite landscapes, brightly colored buildings and scenes from various revolutions of the 20th Century were the culmination of sabbatical leaves the professor took during his more than 20 years on the faculty.

For the first hours of dark on Nov. 12 the grass in front of Oviatt library at California State University Northridge was covered in people wearing white shirts with red letters that read a simple and heartfelt message: "Please Free Esha."

The shirts, the event, and the emotions were all in support of Esha Momeni, a former Santa Monica College student and current grad student at CSUN who is being held in Iran on bail after she was arrested and kept at a political prison in Tehran.

Students and faculty along the coast gained the California State University chancellor's attention Nov. 18 by protesting the most recent budget cuts outside his corporate office in Long Beach.

The Alliance for the CSU as well as the California Faculty Association have called on all supporters to fight Governor Schwarzenegger on his proposal for additional cuts to the CSU system, which have now totaled $66 million.

Santa Monica College's Corsair newspaper received major accolades last weekend at the Journalism Association of Community Colleges conference held at Cal State Fullerton.

The paper was recognized among 31 colleges, and over 400 students competed.

In total, The Corsair won 19 awards including 14 from the Spring 2008 semester under the leadership of Editor-in-Chief

The wine from the Chaffey campus grape harvest is ready for Thanksgiving!

Joseph P. Filippi, local fourth generation vintner, donated the Alicante Bouschet grape vines. Maintenance and harvesting is done by the Joseph Filippi Winery.

Situated on the two-acre northwest corner of the campus and bordered by Haven and Wilson, the beautiful agricultural demonstration vineyard is used to provide the campus

with a scenic garden, while also providing the winery with much needed land in the face of urban sprawl.
