Steps that secured Obama's victory

		Steps that secured Obama's victory

Barack Obama's historic feat of becoming America's next president wasn't a small task.

Being three weeks away from Obama becoming the United States' first African American president, it gave us a greater appreciation for all of the factors that helped him win.

"Yes" On Prop 8 Does Not Equate to Hate

The Occidental Weekly, Occidental College, CA

2 days ago by Don Rowe

This past Sunday, a member of the Oxy community declared to a group of students that he did indeed vote "yes" on the now-infamous Proposition 8. Yet, he is no cold-hearted bigot insidiously bent on ruining the lives of an entire community; in fact, I have always known him to be a giving, compassionate person whose position in the Oxy community involves being a champion of human rights. Indeed, every single person I know who has admitted to voting "yes" on Proposition 8 is an equally compassionate, loving human being absolutely devoid of the "H8" with which the anti-Prop 8 rhetoric has associated them.

Valley - Land of the Brain Dead

Valley Star, Los Angeles Valley College, CA

Valley College is supposed to be a solid learning experience for us all. From academic knowledge to personal growth, the school's Website boasts "developing critical thinkers and life-long learners." What a shame these "life-long learners" don't seem to use any of their learnt skills around campus.

The door swings both ways, you bigots

The word tolerance, is being thrown around all over the place but it seems like nobody knows its meaning anymore. The passing of Proposition 8 is one such example where people are oblivious to what tolerance really is.

Surprise surprise-I'm not referring to the supporters of the proposition.

Affirmative Action and Archaic Institution

The Occidental Weekly, Occidental College, CA

The election of Barack Obama was surely a historic moment in our country's history. Major newspapers declared that the last racial barriers had come crashing down in what the New York Times called a "national catharsis." However, on Nov. 4, I watched something else come crashing down: the last foundations holding up race-based affirmative action.

This Day in History: Nov 26

Blood, sex, murder and a glove are what many remember the O.J. Simpson trial for, those and the fact that he was obviously a guilty man who walked free.

His trial is easily described as the exact reason many Americans do not have faith in the justice system and it is one of the most

infamous court cases in history.

Days of Thunder Here and Gone for Auto Industry

Weekly Hornet, Fullerton College, CA

Detroit made vehicles were once the staple of American life, they provided the icing on the red, white and blue cake of the American dream.

But as foreign automobile companies began to take hold of the American market, the dream quickly became a nightmare for Detroit.

Should Amsterdam be closing down their marijuana coffee shops?

Weekly Hornet, Fullerton College, CA

4 days ago by Tanner Fogle & Steve Womack

Point Tanner Fogle Hornet Staff Writer More than 40 marijuana-selling coffee shops are to be closed in Amsterdam by the year 2011. I am all for this, because now the community can concentrate on the true draw to the European fun capitol - prostitution! You can get drugs anywhere, and if you're having trouble finding them, then come find me after reading this article, the second dime bag is free with a copy of this paper (not really, who would joke about that?) The point is, you don't have to backpack through the java jungles of the Netherlands to score weed.

Power-point has become a crutch for professors

Coyote Chronicle, California State University, San Bernardino, CA

The other day I was snoozing in class, um I mean sitting, when I realized that I was actually paying for the professor in front of me to waste both of our time as she read PowerPoint slides to us off of the big screen.

I began to wonder, do our classes going high-tech really positively influence our learning at all?

I mean, think of all of the technologies that our classes utilize.

Drinking in the spirit of Starbucks' holiday cups

It may seem unorthodox - a praise tribute dedicated to the color of a coffee chain's paper cups - but considering the emotions allied with such festive disposable dishware, this one goes out to the red holiday Starbucks cups.

I am writing in response to articles written by Elizabeth Cutler (Oxy Needs to Open its Mind Politically, 10/22/08) and Dean DeChiaro (Don't be Afraid to Talk to Republicans, 10/22/08). Both these articles, while well articulated, failed to understand the point they both desperately attempted to drive home: diversity in thought and ideology. I argue their failure because neither of the two even mentioned any other political parties besides the two that most Americans find their comfort in, which is, quite frankly, narrow-minded.

Terrible tenures: watch out!

		Terrible tenures: watch out!

The Poly Post, Cal Poly Pomona, CA

5 days ago by Greg Toumassian, Opinions Editor

It's hard enough worrying about getting the classes you need, so why should you have to put up with the bitter frustration of terrible tenures?

Like mold, they have grown into a smelly, spoiled representation of what teachers used to be.

The amount of time spent on campus doesn't equate to experience nor does it correlate with teaching abilities.

YouTube Live shames the Web

As I scribbled down notes on a napkin during Saturday's first and hopefully last "YouTube Live," I was tempted more than once to spit up my lunch.

While this first time, online variety show seemed promising with a jumbled list of quirky acts, A-list stars, one-hit wonders and viral video celebrities, it turned into a sad depiction of how far a company will go to re-establish its own significance.

America's first black president - about time

The Telescope, Palomar College, CA

Being president of the United States is a lofty goal. It's the most stressful job by far in the United States of America. Every citizen and non-citizen's life is in your hands. This has been a position that has been so far out of the reach of black America that we can't see it in the rear view mirror.

Computer updates frustrate

The Poly Post, Cal Poly Pomona, CA

7 days ago by Megan Hartman, Staff Writer

Logging onto the computer has become a time-consuming task for those of us who regularly check our e-mail.

Is there any excuse in this age of convenience?

What I mean when I say time-consuming is that instead of hopping on and off the computer in a timely manner, we are forced to make more than a few clicks with the exiting of those "suggest update" boxes that flood our screen whenever we sign on.
